Veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami’s much-anticipated return to international cricket has hit another roadblock. The speedster, sidelined since his brilliant performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, was absent from Bengal’s squad for their upcoming Ranji Trophy fixtures against Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.
The 34-year-old, who ended as the leading wicket-taker in the event, has been battling an ankle injury since November last year. Despite recent positive signals about his recovery, including a training session under the watchful eyes of India bowling coach Morne Morkel where he was seen bowling at full intensity, Shami’s match fitness remains a concern. Just weeks ago, Shami had expressed confidence about his recovery progress.
“I had been bowling with half a run-up on and off since I can’t put too much stress on my body. So, we decided that I would bowl properly, and I gave my 100%. It felt great, and the results are good. Hopefully, I’ll be back on track soon,” Shami said as quoted by Outlook.

We don’t want to bring undercooked Shami to Australia: Rohit Sharma
The setback has broader implications for Indian cricket, particularly concerning the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma also opened up, mentioning the team’s reluctance to field an underprepared Shami.
“We don’t want to bring undercooked Shami to Australia. We are keeping our fingers crossed,” Rohit had said in Bengaluru recently.
The Australia tour features five Tests including a day-night match at Adelaide Oval. The series starts on November 22 at Perth and concludes with the traditional New Year’s Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7, along with the iconic Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Meanwhile, India announced their squad for the Australia series and opted for five pacers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana. Moreover, Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini, and Khaleel Ahmed will travel with the team as reserves.
