Ace pacer Mohammed Shami’s return to the national side continues as the National Cricket Academy (NCA) is still assessing his fitness. Despite an impressive comeback during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), his readiness for international cricket is under question, delaying any potential call-up to Australia for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).
Shami, sidelined for a year due to an ankle injury that required surgery, returned to domestic cricket recently. Representing Bengal in the SMAT, he bagged eight wickets in seven matches. However, concerns have been raised over his ability to return straight into Test cricket, especially in Australian conditions.
A team, including BCCI’s Sports Science head Nitin Patel, national selector SS Das, and Strength and Conditioning trainer Nishanta Bardule have been monitoring Shami’s recovery closely during his SMAT matches in Rajkot.
Shami to continue his SMAT campaign with Bengal
According to sources, Shami’s immediate inclusion in the BGT remains unlikely. Meanwhile, there is optimism about his availability for the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne, though there’s a real possibility that he might miss the series altogether.
Apart from his surgical ankle, swelling in his knee has raised questions about his ability to perform at the highest level. Even though shorter spells in T20 matches have shown hints of his return, the BCCI is taking cautious steps in making the return of the pacer.
The Bengal pacer will continue his SMAT campaign. With Bengal advancing to the knockouts, he is expected to play in their pre-quarterfinal against Chandigarh at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium.
