Consecutive Test series losses against New Zealand and Australia have only enlarged the magnitude of question marks on what lies ahead for India in the longest format. A continual lean patch for the incumbent full-time skipper as well as the results have amplified the urgency for some important decisions to be made in the near future. Indian pace-bowling spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, is regarded as the successor of Rohit Sharma when it comes to Test cricket.

Former Australian wicketkeeper, Adam Gilchrist, had his reservations on Bumrah being the permanent skipper of the Test side. He shared that it would be no shock if Virat Kohli accepted the baton.

“I don’t know if Bumrah should be the full-time captain. I reckon that might get a little bit challenging for him. So, who that next captain may be is anyone’s guess whether they go back to Virat. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wouldn’t mind doing it. But yeah, I haven’t stopped to think who will be the captain,” mentioned Gilchrist while speaking on Club Prairie Fire.

I’d have someone like Shubman Gill as the vice-captain: Vaughan

Ex-English skipper, Michael Vaughan admitted to wanting Shubman Gill as the permanent second-in-command going forward.

“I’d have someone like Shubman Gill as the vice-captain, and Mark Howard calls him the elegant one. Now, the elegant one needs to understand that getting 20 to 30 elegantly is not going to be a Test career. Averaging over 45 which I think he’s got the game to do,” Vaughan added.

For the unversed, Bumrah was assigned as the standby skipper in the series opener against Australia in the recently concluded edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Not only did he lead the charge with the ball, but the clever rotation of bowlers in addition to the proactive adjustments made to the field according to the batter and situation was commendable, to say the least. India ended up taking the lead in the series by dominantly triumphing in Perth by 295 runs.
