MI Cape Town had assembled arguably the strongest side on paper for the inaugural season of SA20 2023. However, most of the players couldn’t do justice to their potential as they finished last in the points table with just three wins in 10 games.

The MI think tank is leaving no stone unturned in their quest to turn things around in the second season. In the same vein, the Cape Town-based franchise has parted ways with last season’s head coach Simon Katich and the bowling coach, Jacob Oram. They have now assigned the former South African spinner, Robin Peterson, as their new head coach. Notably, he was the General Manager of the MI Cape Town franchise in 2023.

On the other hand, legendary Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga has been roped in as the bowling coach. Malinga has had a fantastic relationship with the MI management as he has played nine seasons for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Mumbai Indians, and is also their current bowling coach. Besides, the legendary former South Africa batter, Hashim Amla, will continue his role as the batting coach of MI Cape Town.

For the unversed, Peterson and Malinga served as the head coach and bowling coach, respectively, of the MI New York franchise that won the inaugural season of the Major League Cricket in the USA earlier this year.

Skipper Rashid Khan retained along with Dewald Brevis by MI Cape Town for SA20 2024 edition

The talismanic Afghanistan leg spinner and the MI Cape Town skipper, Rashid Khan, who led the side last season, has been retained for the forthcoming edition of the SA20 as well. Among other notable players who have been retained are Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis, and Sam Curran, respectively. Cape Town will have to fill a minimum of four slots in the upcoming SA20 auction on Wednesday.

The SA20 2024 begins on January 10, 2024, with defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape squaring off against Joburg Super Kings, in Gqeberha. MI Cape Town will travel to Durban to play against Durban Super Giants on January 11, in the tournament opener.
