Matthew Mott has joined the Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Sydney Sixers as assistant coach on a three-year deal. Mott’s appointment was made after he departed as England Men’s white-ball head coach, with red-ball coach Brendon McCullum also taking the limited-overs charge.

Before his stint with England, Mott coached the Australian Women’s team for eight years, achieving remarkable success. His time with England saw the team win the 2022 T20 World Cup victory in Australia. However, recent disappointments, including a semi-final exit in this year’s T20 World Cup and a poor showing in the 2023 ODI World Cup, led to his departure.

“I’m delighted to join back up with the Sydney Sixers. Having started my coaching journey in Sydney many years ago, it’s a place that evokes both great memories and a comforting sense of familiarity, which I’m looking forward to. The idea of being an assistant to Greg Shipperd, who I have a tremendous amount of respect for, really appealed to me,” he said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

We couldn’t be more pleased to have Motty committed: Rachael Haynes

Mott’s return to the New South Wales system also means a reunion with Rachael Haynes, now the Sixers’ general manager and formerly a key player in the Australian side Mott coached. Haynes mentioned Mott’s impressive track record and his ability to build and sustain a winning culture.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to have Motty committed for the next three years with the club. When the opportunity arises to bring a coach of Motty’s caliber into your ranks, it’s a no-brainer. We know what a fantastic resource he will be for our playing group,” Haynes said.

Mott’s addition to the coaching staff, alongside head coach Greg Shipperd and women’s program leader Charlotte Edwards, positions the club for continued success. With recent draft picks like James Vince and Jafer Chohan and the acquisition of Akeal Hosein, the Sixers are gearing up for an exciting season ahead.
