Matheesha Pathirana wins prestigious accolade at India’s Behindwoods Gold Icon Awards 2024

Further acclaim has been bestowed upon Sri Lanka’s pace-bowling maestro, Matheesha Pathirana, who was recently honoured with the esteemed Behindwoods Gold Icon Awards 2024 for the Most Popular Icon in the “sports” category.

Despite a truncated 2024 edition in the Indian Premier League with the Chennai Super Kings due to suffering a hamstring injury, limiting him to just six matches, the 21-year-old youngster remained the standout sensation of the season in terms of the bowlers. His distinctive slingy bowling action proved formidable and overwhelmingly challenging for opposing batters. He maintained an impressive economy rate of 7.68 during a season marked by explosive batting performances, with a record number of boundaries and an overall elevated run rate in every phase of the game.

Precisely one month following Pathirana’s final appearance in the 17th edition of the IPL, he embarked on his T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with Sri Lanka. Although he did not claim as many wickets as anticipated, he maintained an economy of 5.10, consistently delivering his utmost effort in each match.

The Behindwoods Gold Icon 2024 is one of India’s most prestigious awards ceremonies, celebrating excellence across various fields including cinema, sports, and the arts. The event is renowned for its star-studded attendance and grandiose presentation.

The pacer was also seen in a selfie with famous Indian music composer, Anirudh Ravichander, who also serves as a playback singer primarily in Tamil cinema.

He recently concluded his stint representing Nondescripts Cricket Club in the Major Clubs T20 Tournament, triumphing with the team to secure the title.

Sri Lanka’s forthcoming endeavour will see them touring England for a three-match Test series scheduled for the August-September period.
