Former Prime Minister of India and the architect of the country’s economic liberalisation, Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. His demise, due to age-related medical complications, was confirmed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh quickly pushed up the ranks for his exceptional academic capabilities and dedication to public service. He served as India’s 13th Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.
Before assuming the nation’s highest political office, he was the Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. It was during this tenure in 1991 that Dr. Singh introduced groundbreaking economic reforms that changed India’s route, pulling the nation from near bankruptcy and assisting into an era of liberalisation and global integration.
He was the first Sikh to hold the Prime Minister’s office and the first leader since Jawaharlal Nehru to be re-elected after completing a full term.
Political leaders, dignitaries, and citizens along with the cricket fraternity paid tribute to the former PM. Furthermore, the Indian cricket team sported wearing black armbands during the second day of the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as a mark of respect.
The likes of Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, and many more former and current stars paid their regards to the former Prime Minister’s demise.
“Saddened by the news of the sudden demise of former Prime Minister, a thorough gentleman, and a visionary leader, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji What truly set him apart was his calm and steady leadership in times of crisis, his ability to navigate complex political landscapes, and his unwavering belief in India’s potential. Nation will always remember Dr. Saheb for his contributions. My deepest condolences to his family and relatives. Satnam Waheguru,” wrote Harbhajan Singh on Twitter.
“India and its economy will forever be indebted to Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji for his remarkable contributions. May his soul rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences to his family” wrote Irfan Pathan.
