The Lucknow Super Giants made a significant acquisition by securing Shivam Mavi for a substantial INR 6.4 crore in the 2024 IPL auction. Engaging in a bidding war with RCB initially, LSG emerged victorious in signing the bowler for the staggering amount. Mavi, previously associated with Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans, brings his valuable experience to the team.
Additionally, LSG added the promising uncapped Indian batter Arshin Kulkarni at his base price of INR 20 lakh. Currently playing for Team India U-19, Kulkarni showcased impressive skills in the recently concluded Maharashtra Premier League. He has been known for his all-round abilities and the rare skill of seam bowling.
LSG made additional signings, securing M Siddharth for INR 2.40 crore. Siddharth, a left-arm spinner, gained recognition in the Tamil Nadu Premier League and had previously been associated with KKR and Chennai Super Kings. The Lucknow-based franchise also bolstered their squad with the acquisitions of all-rounders Ashton Turner (Australia) and David Willey (England) for INR 1 crore and INR 2 crore, respectively.
Before the auction took place in Dubai on December 19, LSG released eight players, leaving them with a purse limit of INR 13.15 crore to fill six vacant spots. Out of the 18 retained players, 12 are Indian, and six are overseas players, including notable names like KL Rahul, Krunal Pandya, Quinton de Kock, Nicholas Pooran, Marcus Stoinis, Naveen Ul Haq, and Mark Wood. The released players include Jaydev Unadkat, Manan Vohra, Swapnil Singh, Karan Sharma, Arpit Guleria, Suryansh Shedge, Karun Nair, and Daniel Sams.
Earlier, LSG traded in top-order left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal from Rajasthan Royals (RR), enhancing their batting depth. The 23-year-old, purchased by RR for Rs 7.75 crore, has featured in 57 IPL matches, accumulating 1521 runs with a century and nine half-centuries. The Kerala-born batter moved to LSG in exchange for his existing fee. Additionally, LSG conducted trades, sending Avesh Khan and Romario Shepherd to RR and MI, respectively.
Founded in 2021, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have competed in two Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons, achieving top-four finishes in both. During the 2022 season, the franchise secured a third-place finish in the group stage, advancing to the playoffs. In the Eliminator match, they faced Royal Challengers Bangalore, finishing their journey at that stage.
Meanwhile, the 2023 season witnessed a similar outcome, with LSG finishing third again and losing the eliminator, this time to the five-time champions Mumbai Indians. Having secured consecutive playoff finishes in their two IPL seasons, LSG are poised to elevate their standing in the points table during the forthcoming 2024 season, setting their sights on capturing the inaugural title in the lucrative league.
