‘Likelihood is that Green will slot straight back in’ – Jason Gillespie feels Mitchell Marsh has not sealed his spot despite Headingley ton

Gillespie delved into the Mitchell Marsh-Cameron Green conundrum facing Australia. Despite Marsh’s hundred, Gillespie believes that the 24-year-old Green, being the incumbent, would likely get the nod over Marsh if he is fit and the team can only accommodate one of them.

“Mitchell Marsh scoring that brilliant century in the first innings at Headingley will have given the selectors a lot of food for thought. But Cameron Green is the incumbent. If he is fit and they only go with one of them, I think the likelihood is that Green will slot straight back in,” Gillespie stated his column for the Daily Mail.

He also highlighted the mindset that enabled Marsh to play such an impactful knock. Aware of his position as Green’s understudy, Marsh played with remarkable clarity.

“He knows he is Green’s understudy and that his chances of playing Test cricket depend on Green’s availability. So, he has absolutely nothing to lose when he goes out to bat. He can just see the ball and hit it, and I have always said Mitch is at his best when he plays with that sort of clarity. When he hits them, they stay hit. In that hundred, he played some of the best shots of this series,” Gillespie emphasized.

Consequently, the potential return of Green poses a significant selection dilemma for Australian team. Marsh’s standout performance in the third Test has undoubtedly complicated the decision. However, Gillespie’s analysis aligns with the prevailing belief that Green’s role as the preferred all-rounder is unlikely to change.
