Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced that Laura Wolvaardt will be the interim captain of the senior women’s cricket team. This appointment comes after the resignation of Sune Luus and the unavailability of vice-captain Chloe Tryon for the upcoming Pakistan series.

Wolvaardt’s leadership stint is set to commence in under two months, covering the team’s tour of Pakistan and the home series against New Zealand, culminating on October 15. However, CSA clarified that her position will be subject to review following the conclusion of the New Zealand tour. The young cricketer expressed her excitement about the opportunity, stating, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

“It’s a massive honour to be offered this position as captain for the next two tours. Having more of a leadership role is something I’ve wanted to take on. It’ll help me as a cricketer, and learning to think as a captain on the field will hopefully help my batting as well.”

Wolvaardt’s selection was lauded by Enoch Nkwe, CSA’s director of cricket, who highlighted her dedication, leadership acumen, and cricketing prowess. Nkwe emphasised that her ability to remain composed under pressure and her deep understanding of the game made her the “ideal candidate to lead the team.”

“Laura’s dedication, leadership acumen, and cricketing prowess have been evident throughout her career, her ability to stay composed under pressure and her deep understanding of the game make her an ideal candidate to lead the team. Laura’s influence as captain will extend beyond her individual performances as she guides the team toward their goals,” Nkwe said.

South Africa’s upcoming cricket calendar includes a white-ball tour of Pakistan comprising three T20Is and ODIs, starting September 1. Following this, the team is set to host New Zealand for three ODIs and five T20Is.

As Wolvaardt steps into this new role, her calm and level-headed approach, coupled with the guidance of senior players within the squad, could potentially shape a promising chapter in the team’s journey.
