What could have been, or some may say should have been, didn’t happen. On this day in 2023, over a billion hearts and dreams were shattered as Australia defeated India in the ODI World Cup 2023 final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Rohit Sharma-led side was undefeated in the tournament until then, playing some phenomenal cricket, but when it mattered the most, they crumbled and were left wounded.

The story started with India playing Australia in the first game of their campaign on October 08. The Men in Blue won by six wickets after KL Rahul played a valuable knock of 97* at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. That set the tone for the hosts, who were heads and shoulders above other teams in the competition. Meanwhile, when India were winning all their matches, Australia were going through a losing streak and there were doubts if the Pat Cummins-led side would even qualify for the semis.

Everything changed since then as Australia went on to win a few important games. Yet, things could have been different if Afghanistan had figured out a way to dismiss Glenn Maxwell. Despite being injured, the attacking batter smacked 201* runs at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, which gave Australia the momentum and the belief to go on and lift the coveted trophy.

Meanwhile, after defeating all the teams in the league stage, India went on to beat New Zealand by 70 runs in Mumbai. The Kiwis bothered India multiple times in ICC tournaments and with the Men in Blue winning this time, the fans were convinced that something special was loading for 19th November. Australia, on the other hand, defeated South Africa in the second semi-final at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

The momentum was with India leading to the final. Playing at home, in front of more than one lakh people and all the players are in form, what could go wrong? Everything. Ahead of the final, captain Pat Cummins intimated the Indian fan base, stating that he would like to see a sea of one lakh people go quiet on the final and after which, the pacer was trolled on the internet and was called out for his ‘overconfidence’.

In reality, India were bowled out for 240 runs and Australia chased it with seven overs remaining. Travis Head arguably played the innings of his life, hitting 137 runs, while Marnus Labuschagne supported him well with an unbeaten 58. Rahul, who was adjudged Player of the Match in India’s first game of the campaign against Australia, was made the villain by the fans for his 66-run knock off 107 balls.

After the loss, the Indian players were in tears and none of them wanted to face the camera. Even many months after that, Rohit revealed that the loss still hurts him and when it comes to the fans, they still haven’t moved on, despite the T20 World Cup 2024 success. Mohammed Shami, who was breathing fire all the while, was fired off a World Cup dream. Virat Kohli, who broke several records with his 765 runs in the tournament, saw his dreams shatter into pieces at the end of the day.
