The shortlist for the IPL 2024 auction was announced on December 11, 2023, by the BCCI. It sees 333 players going under the hammer in the auction, which takes place on December 19, 2023, in Dubai.
From an initial auction pool of 1166 players, 333 players have been shortlisted. Of these, 119 are overseas players, including two from Associate nations – Netherlands’ fast bowler Paul van Meekeren and Namibia all-rounder David Wiese.
The auction will begin with capped players, starting with batters, followed by all-rounders, wicketkeepers, fast bowlers, and spinners in the listed order. The same sequence will be followed for the uncapped players.
However, several players had some big names, who were not shortlisted for the mini-auction for the IPL 2024. In this piece, let’s have a look at those overseas players who didn’t make it into the final list of 119 foreign players to go under the hammer.
Overseas players who didn’t get shortlisted for the IPL 2024 auction:
1. Angelo Mathews
Sri Lankan superstar Angelo Mathews has been part of the IPL for several seasons. He played for Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League. However, poor performance and injuries have meant that his appearances in the IPL have not benefitted the teams he has played for. At 37, Mathews has seen better days and it seems franchises have also moved on from him.
2. Tom Banton
Tom Banton, the England batter, has played 6 ODIs and 14 T20Is for England since making his debut in 2019. However, much of his focus has been on T20 franchise leagues and he has played in numerous such tournaments. He was picked in the IPL as well by Kolkata Knight Riders but didn’t get many opportunities to prove himself. He has a decent record of 2779 runs in 122 T20 matches with two centuries and a strike rate of 143.17.
3. Moises Henriques
Moises Henriques of Australia had a good time in the IPL, playing for Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and Mumbai Indians. A tall pacer and hard-hitting batter, Henriques has also played four Tests, 16 ODIs, and 24 T20Is for Australia. In T20s, he has 4963 runs and 116 wickets in 262 matches. However, given that he is almost 37 years old, the franchises weren’t interested in him being part of the IPL 2024 auction.
4. Daniel Worrall
Daniel Worrall is a right-arm pacer, who has played three ODIs for Australia in 2016. The 32-year-old is a known name in Australian domestic cricket and the Big Bash League. However, his T20 numbers are not something to boast about as he has 65 wickets in 76 T20s at an economy of 8.02. Considered mostly to be a good FC bowler, keeping his base price at INR 2 crores in the IPL 2024 auction didn’t help Worrall at all and he wasn’t shortlisted.
5. Marchant de Lange
A tall, right-handed pacer, capable of hitting the high 140s, Marchant de Lange was one of the few early South African cricketers to go the franchise cricket path. He played two Tests, four ODIs, and six T20Is for South Africa. He has also played for Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians in the IPL. However, since playing his last international match in 2016, De Lange has focused on T20 and T10 cricket.
6. Dawid Malan
Dawid Malan chose to keep his base price for IPL 2024 auction at INR 2 crores. He was once the no.1 ranked T20I batter and held onto the position for a long time. But now, his impact in the format has waned a bit. He has 8667 runs in 316 T20s with five centuries and a strike rate of 129.74. His only outing in IPL came for Punjab Kings, where he played one game in IPL 2021.
Malan was probably not shortlisted because of his apparent lack of experience playing in India and a visible struggle against quality spin. Him being on the wrong side of 30 didn’t help the England opener much in his quest for another shot at the IPL.
7. Chris Lynn
Chris Lynn was once the hit man for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. For a couple of seasons, the Australian opener wreaked havoc on opposition bowlers. He made over 400 runs in IPL 2018 and 2019 and in IPL as a whole, he has 1329 runs in 42 matches with a best of 93 at a strike rate of 140.63. However, injuries and form issues meant that his impact and availability were both affected and IPL franchises looked past him. He last played one match in IPL 2021 for Mumbai Indians.
8. Kane Richardson
Kane Richardson is a decent pacer who has played 25 ODIs and 36 T20Is for Australia. He is a regular in the BBL and the Hundred tournaments. In the IPL, Richardson has played 15 games, taking 19 wickets. He has played for Rajasthan Royals, Pune Warriors, and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. However, since IPL 2021, when he decided to leave the tournament early during the second wave of the Covid pandemic, Kane Richardson has not found buyers in the IPL auctions.
9. Corey Anderson
Corey Anderson once held the record for the fastest ODI century and has played one of the all-time greatest IPL knocks ever, which came for Mumbai Indians. Anderson played in the IPL for Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, and Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, after his career was impacted by several injuries. Anderson retired from international cricket in 2020.
Since then, the New Zealander has been busy playing in all the T20 and T10 leagues in the world. But his last appearance in the IPL came in 2018 and since then, due to injuries and the fact that he no longer plays international cricket, has meant that he has gone unsold in IPL auctions.
10. Colin Ingram
Colin Ingram was a surprise pick in IPL 2019 by Delhi Capitals and he made 184 runs in 12 matches. This was only the second time Ingram played in IPL since the 2011 edition. However, despite playing 333 T20 matches and scoring 8188 runs with four centuries, Ingram has found it difficult to break into the IPL for the fact that he hasn’t played for South Africa since 2013 and is only active in T20 leagues.
11. Martin Guptill
Martin Guptill, despite his best efforts, failed to crack the IPL code. In 13 matches, he managed 270 runs with only one 50. His apparent weakness against quality spin and failure to acclimatize with Indian pitches has led to franchises not being interested in the Kiwi opener anymore. Keeping his base price at INR 2 crores has not helped New Zealand much, especially since he has gone freelancer.
12. D’Arcy Short
D’Arcy Short, a talented left-handed all-rounder, was picked in the IPL 2018 by Rajasthan Royals after a very good BBL season. But he could only manage 115 runs in 7 matches and failed to crack the spin code on Indian pitches. He has been terrific given that Short has played 23 T20Is and 8 ODIs for Australia, but his high base price and poor performance in India have meant he was not shortlisted for the IPL 2024 auction.
