Renowned commentator and former Indian player Sanjay Manjrekar did not hesitate to mock Glenn Maxwell’s inconsistent performances. During the IPL 2025 match between PBKS and RR, the JioHotstar expert was in the dugout and compared Maxwell’s knocks with Halley’s Comet’s appearances. Sanjay regarded the PBKS batter as the ‘Halley’s Comet of cricket.’

Manjrekar noted that Halley’s Comet is visible on Earth once every 75 years. Sanjay noted that it was visible in 1986 and will be visible again in 2061. He compared its rare appearance to Maxwell’s number of good performances and mocked the lack of consistency in Maxwell’s batting. His statement has received mixed opinions from fans on social media.

“Halley’s Comet orbits the sun and is visible from Earth once every 75 years. Just like that, Glenn Maxwell plays one good match in 75 games. It was last seen in 1986, and it will now be spotted in 2061. It’s the same case with Maxwell in batting. Glenn Maxwell is Halley’s Comet of Cricket,” Manjrekar said on JioHotstar.

Maxwell’s inconsistency as a batter in IPL

The reason behind Manjrekar’s comparison was Glenn Maxwell‘s inability to make the most of his talent. While the Australian batter is one of the most aggressive batters in the history of the sport, he hasn’t been as consistent in delivering. From 2014 to 2024, he was a part of the IPL in 10 seasons, where he got to play at least 10 matches.

In as many seasons, he scored more than 300 runs in 5 seasons and failed to do so in the same number of instances. Maxwell scored over 300 runs at an average of over 30 in 4 instances in 2014, 2017, 2021, 2022, and 2023, respectively. In 2022, he had an average of over 27.

However, Maxwell had poor seasons in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2024 with the bat, where he could not score more than 180 runs and averaged less than 20. Apart from his batting performances, Maxwell has been a handy contributor as a bowler and has hardly put a foot wrong as a fielder.
