IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians’ net worth and revenue sources – Explained

IPL 2025 Mumbai Indians' net worth and revenue sources - Explained

Mumbai Indians (MI), the joint-most successful franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been touching numerous heights on and off the field, particularly with their finances. Owned by Reliance Industries through Indiawin Sports Pvt Ltd, the franchise has grown into a billion-dollar brand, securing massive revenues from sponsorships, media rights, ticket sales, and global investments. With an estimated brand value of USD 119 million in 2024, the Mumbai Indians remain one of the most valuable teams in the league.

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), owned by the billionaire Mukesh Ambani, acquired the franchise in 2008 for USD 111.9 million. Since then, the team has gone on to become a global cricketing brand. Indiawin Sports Pvt Ltd, which manages MI, recorded a huge jump in revenue from INR 358.79 crore in FY23 to INR 737 crore in FY24, making a net profit of INR 109 crore. This financial structure is largely supported by central revenue pools, sponsorships, and ticketing revenue.

A major portion of Mumbai Indians’ revenue comes from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In FY23, the side received INR 227 crore as their share from the central media rights deal, a system in which the BCCI distributes 40-50% of its media earnings among the franchises. With media rights deals becoming more lucrative, MI’s revenue from this source continues to grow.

MI and franchises like Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru earn between INR 100 crore to INR 150 crore annually from sponsorship deals according to one estimate. In 2023, MI made INR 10.8 crore from sponsorships through brands like Jio and Dream11. With almost all sponsorship slots filled, this is one of their strongest revenue streams.

Substantial income from ticket sales and event management

The Ambani-owned team generates substantial income from ticket sales and event management, earning INR 92.79 crore in 2023. The team’s strong fan base of over 50 million followers across social media platforms helps in getting merchandise sales.

The company has also acquired teams in various T20 leagues, such as MI Cape Town (SA20), MI Emirates (ILT20), and MI New York (Major League Cricket). Additionally, their Women’s Premier League (WPL) team, which they acquired for INR 912.99 crore (USD 110 million at that time), won the 2023 and 2025 seasons. Under the MI banner, they have won a total of 12 trophies so far, which has complemented their financial boost.

Their brand value has reportedly increased to USD 119 million in 2024, marking a 36% increase from the previous year. While the Chennai-based team leads the IPL brand valuation at USD 122 million, MI remains a close second. The team’s total spend on players for IPL 2025 was INR 119.80 crore, including their five retentions and auction buys.
