Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for the first time at Chepauk since the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Friday, March 28.
After being asked to bat first, Phil Salt gave RCB a dazzling start inside the powerplay by hitting some audacious strokes. However, his innings of 32 off 16 balls ended when he was stumped brilliantly by MS Dhoni. Devdutt Padikkal played a brief but impactful innings at No. 3, scoring 27 off 14 deliveries.
Virat Kohli struggled to find his timing after an over from Matheesha Pathirana, where he hit the Sri Lankan seamer for a six and a four off back-to-back deliveries. Kohli was eventually dismissed for a 30-ball 31. RCB skipper Rajat Patidar was dropped thrice in two overs, and he made good use of the lifelines.
The right-handed batter scored a crucial 51 off 32 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes. In the last over, Tim David smashed three sixes off Sam Curran to help RCB finish with a commendable total of 196/7. Noor Ahmad was the pick of the bowlers for CSK as he bagged a three-for.
In reply, CSK got off to a horrible start as they lost the wickets of Rahul Tripathi and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in the second over bowled by Josh Hazlewood. Deepak Hooda was also dismissed cheaply in the fifth over as CSK slumped to 26/3.
Rachin Ravindra and Sam Curran tried to form a partnership, but the latter was dismissed while trying to hit a big shot of compatriot Liam Livingstone. Wickets kept falling through the middle overs as CSK were seven down for 99 with 28 balls left to play.

MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja added 31 runs off 20 deliveries to delay the inevitable. After Jadeja was dismissed in the penultimate over, Dhoni hit two sixes and a four off the last over bowled by Krunal Pandya to reduce the margin of defeat. The former CSK captain finished unbeaten on 30 off 16 balls, with the home side managing 146/8 in their 20 overs. Hazlewood finished with excellent figures of 3/21 in his four overs. Meanwhile, Yash Dayal and Livingstone bagged two wickets apiece. Bhuvneshwar Kumar also accounted for a wicket on his RCB debut.
