New Zealand legend Kane Williamson praised Shreyas Iyer and Shashank Singh for their knocks against Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League). The New Zealand cricketer felt Iyer led from the front, taking on some of the best pacers in the world and a spinner like Rashid Khan. Kane felt Shashank had a wide variety of shots and utilised them well against the Titans’ attack.

Williamson claimed Iyer’s knock was of the highest standard. The former Kiwi skipper said Shreyas stepped up as the leader and played an unbelievable innings. He felt Iyer’s game against short balls had improved and the bowlers found it difficult to operate against him.

“For a period, teams targeted him with short balls, but now, he’s adjusting brilliantly—getting deeper in his crease, de-weighting his front leg, and dominating the short-pitched deliveries. What’s most impressive is his ability to shift his weight forward again, making it difficult for bowlers who try the ‘one-two’ approach—going short, then full,” said Williamson while speaking in the JioStar dugout.

Williamson praises Shashank’s knock against Gujarat Titans

The star player was in awe of Shashank Singh’s batting. The experienced cricketer felt Singh had a breakout season in 2024 and continued where he left off. The JioStar expert felt Shashank had a lot of scoring options and played them while still at the crease. Kane Williamson felt Shashank played ramp shots, pulled the ball off the length, and played straight drives with ease.

Moreover, Shashank allowed no room for Rashid to commit mistakes. He pointed to one particular shot when Singh slapped it back over square and felt it was difficult to play against someone like Rashid.

“The way he comes in during the death overs, with little time to settle, and takes on bowlers with confidence is exceptional. Whether it’s Rashid Khan missing his length slightly and Shashank slapping it back over square—that’s an incredibly difficult shot against someone of Rashid’s calibre. It just speaks to the quality of the player,” Williamson conc;uded.
