The Mumbai Indians have been dealt with a huge blow ahead of the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League, as star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the season, according to reports. The Indian bowler underwent a lower-back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25’s fifth and final Test in Sydney. Since then, the seamer has been away from any cricketing action, and also missed the triumphant Champions Trophy 2025 for India.
Bumrah’s bowling action has been extremely stressing on his physique, which has taken a toll on his body throughout his career. A similar injury back in 2022 had ruled him out of cricket for almost 11 months, as the pacer returned for Asia Cup in 2023 and the ODI World Cup. His comeback lasted roughly a year and half, since the issue has emerged once again now.
As per ESPNcricinfo, there is no certainty as to when the speedster would be joining the Mumbai Indians’ camp. Notably, Bumrah had undergone scans earlier this year, before he was ruled out of England series and the Champions Trophy as well. Now, missing the opening of the IPL 2025 is also on the cards for the Ahmedabad-born. BCCI Centre of Excellence would be required to clear him fit, before he could join MI set-up for the season.
For the unversed, MI are already without skipper Hardik Pandya for their first couple of league games against Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans on March 23 and 29, respectively. Pandya had faced a two-match ban following subsequent slow over-rates MI underwent during the 2024 edition under his captaincy. As a result, unavailability of Bumrah becomes a double blow for the five-time champions.

Another injury at the same spot would end Bumrah’s career: Shane Bond
Recently, New Zealand’s veteran pacer Shane Bond had come forward and said that if India’s premier pacer faces another blow on the same spot, it could well lead to an end to Bumrah’s career as a bowler. Bond, who has worked as bowling coach for Mumbai previously, noted that Bumrah boasts an element of risk to play in the IPL, keeping in mind India’s upcoming Test tour to England for four games.
