The Mumbai Indians (MI) finally brought their A-game with the ball as they dismantled the defending champions, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), in Match 12 of IPL 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium. Hardik Pandya’s captaincy was top-notch, and the MI bowlers executed their plans to perfection, never letting KKR settle at any point. The visitors were bundled out for a mere 116 in just 16.2 overs, setting up a golden opportunity for MI to register their first win of the season.
The star of the evening was debutant Ashwani Kumar, who produced a dream spell of 4/24 in three overs. His four-wicket haul is now the best by an Indian on IPL debut. He outfoxed the batters with ease, making it seem as though he was an IPL veteran and not a first-timer.
Trent Boult drew the first blood by removing Sunil Narine for a duck in the opening over, while Deepak Chahar followed up by dismissing Quinton de Kock cheaply. KKR never recovered from their poor start, as MI’s bowling attack kept chipping in with wickets.
It was a forgettable outing for the visiting team with the bat. After losing their openers within two overs, skipper Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi attempted to stabilise but could not make their stay for too long. Rinku Singh and Manish Pandey, who were brought in as the Impact Player, got starts but failed to convert them into impactful contributions.

Andre Russell, who is often KKR’s savior in such situations, could not provide any fireworks and fell cheaply to Ashwani. Ramandeep Singh’s late cameo gave the side a minor hope, but it was never going to be enough against the home team.
Pandya guided his troops exceptionally well, with spot-on bowling changes and field placements. His decision to introduce Ashwani early paid off heavily. With a target of 117 to chase, MI has a golden opportunity to secure their first win of the season. After two losses, they will be looking to get their campaign back on track.
