Shreyas Iyer led Punjab Kings (PBKS) from the front with a brilliant 97* (42) as his team posted 243/5 in their opening clash in IPL 2025 against Gujarat Titans (GT) after being asked to bat first at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, March 25.

Priyansh Arya played a blinder of a knock at the top of the order after his fellow opener Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the fourth over. Shreyas and Arya took the Gujarat bowlers to the cleaners in their 51-run partnership, which came off just 21 balls.

After Arya was dismissed for 47 off 23 balls, Azmatullah Omarzai started in great style by depositing compatriot Rashid Khan for a six off the first ball he faced. He hit two more boundaries during his knock of 16 off 15 balls before being dismissed by R Sai Kishore. The left-arm spinner took the wickets of Glenn Maxwell (0) and Marcus Stoinis (20). However, Shreyas continued with his dazzling batting display.

In the first ball of the 17th over, Shreyas copped a blow on his body from a short ball from Prasidh Krishna. He scored 24 off the next five deliveries. Shashank Singh walked out to bat at No. 7 and continued from where he had left off last season. The right-handed batter hit two sixes and a boundary off the following over bowled by Rashid Khan.

After the 17th and 18th overs yielded a total of 44 runs, Rabada conceded 10 off the 19th. Shreyas needed three runs in the last over to notch up his maiden IPL century. Mohammed Siraj, who had conceded 31 runs in his first three overs without picking up a wicket, came in to bowl the final over. The Hyderabad bowler was put to the sword by Shashank, who smashed him for five boundaries. Shreyas did not get the strike in the last over as he remained stranded on 97 off 42 balls. However, he left the field with a broad smile on his face as he knew his team had a huge score on the board. Shashank remained unbeaten on 44 off 16 balls as the last five overs yielded 87 runs.
