IPL 2025: From autorickshaw driver’s son to MI’s new star – Vignesh’s incredible journey

IPL 2025: From autorickshaw driver’s son to MI’s new star – Vignesh’s incredible journey

Mumbai Indians (MI) lost their IPL 2025 opening match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk. However, a new star emerged from the game—Vignesh Puthur. The 24-year-old left-arm wrist spinner from Kerala, making his IPL debut, impressed everyone with his spell. Puthur, who had never played a T20 match at the senior level before this, bagged three wickets.

Hailing from Perinthalmanna in Kerala, Puthur grew up in a middle-class family where his father, Sunil, made significant sacrifices to support his son’s cricketing aspirations. Sunil, who previously ran an agency for a biscuit brand, switched to driving an auto-rickshaw to ensure that Vignesh could attend cricket training regularly. His hard work paid off when Vignesh joined the Perinthalmanna Cricket Academy under coach C.G. Vijayakumar, who immediately noticed the youngster’s ability to spin the ball.

“The local media in Kerala swamped the house from as early as 7 a.m. until evening. He is my only son, and I wanted to support him to the best of my ability. The only thing I wanted to do was to ensure I supported his decision to pursue cricket,” Sunil said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Vignesh’s talent saw him progress through the Kerala age-group teams, featuring at the Under-14, Under-19, and Under-23 levels. Despite not making his senior state debut, he was spotted by former India pacer T.A. Sekar during trials in Thiruvananthapuram.

MS Dhoni praises Vignesh Puthur after impressive debut

Sekar, impressed by Puthur, recommended him for IPL trials, leading to Mumbai Indians picking him up for INR 30 lakh in the 2025 auction. At the trials, Vignesh bowled well and showcased his ability to bowl googlies. Earlier this year, MI sent him to South Africa to bowl in the nets for MI Cape Town batters in the SA20 league. Before IPL 2025, he also played in the DY Patil T20 Invitational Trophy in Navi, Mumbai.

“He had a very good action. He was flighting the ball well and spinning it both ways. I always look for a good technique and see if a bowler has variations. I observed both of those before recommending him for trials,” T.A. Sekar said.

Puthur’s debut for the Mumbai franchise was brilliant, as he dismissed CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad right after he reached his fifty, then went on to remove Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda in quick succession. Though MI couldn’t secure a victory, Vignesh’s performance became the biggest talking point of the match. Even MS Dhoni patted him on the shoulder after the game. MI has a reputation for scouting young talent, and Vignesh is another exciting addition to their list.
