Jubilant from registering wins in their respective opening matches of IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League), both Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will gear up to continue their ongoing rivalry at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai—the home venue for the former. Notably, the upcoming IPL fixture will be played on Friday, March 28. This also means that RCB will be on the road for a second consecutive game, while CSK will be at home for two games in a row.

RCB started their season with a bang by putting one over defending champions KKR in their own home at Kolkata in the first match of this season. KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane got them off to a flier in the powerplay, even though Sunil Narine surprisingly took his time getting into the groove. Both were dismissed in quick succession, giving RCB the opening they needed. Krunal Pandya led RCB’s bowling comeback as they gave away only 67 runs in the last ten overs—and just 29 in the last five.

Phil Salt and Virat Kohli wasted no time in going after the target and decided the game with a brutal powerplay assault. As both openers completed their fifties, RCB skipper Rajat Patidar and later Liam Livingstone applied the finishing touches to a chase completed with 22 balls to spare.

CSK had a harder time overcoming arch-rivals MI in Chennai. CSK bowled first and struck immediately on a two-paced surface. Khaleel Ahmed provided important strikes in the powerplay, and Noor Ahmad’s four-wicket haul in the middle overs fully put the brakes on MI. Deepak Chahar’s death-overs burst with the bat gave MI something to bowl at. Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, unperturbed by an early wicket, took the attack to the opposition.

By the time he was done, it looked like the game was firmly in Chennai’s grasp. Vignesh Puthur, making his senior cricket debut, then produced a three-wicket burst to derail CSK’s chase. It was then down to Rachin Ravindra, who weathered the storm and took CSK home in the very last over.

The Chennai surface seems to be a breath of fresh air at a time when 200 has been breached in six team innings out of 12 in IPL 2025. It is likely to stay slow in order to suit CSK’s spin strength.

Player battles to watch out for in CSK vs RCB, Match 8:

Virat Kohli vs Ravindra Jadeja

The two Under-19 World Cup-winning teammates have had a long battle in the IPL, and by the looks of it, there may not necessarily be a winner here. Slow scoring but almost never getting out against spin is a constant feature of the way Kohli plays, and it shows. Against the southpaw, Kohli has managed 157 runs from 145 balls at a strike rate of just 108.27 while being dismissed thrice at an average of 52.33.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is among the highest wicket-takers in IPL history but has never managed to get the better of the CSK skipper in the tournament. In 48 balls, Gaikwad has made 69 runs against Kumar at a strike rate of 143.75.
