The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction, held at the Abady Al Johar Arena in Jeddah, saw some historic bidding wars that rewrote the record books. The auction’s milestone moment came when Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player in IPL history, acquired for an extraordinary sum of INR 27 crore by the Lucknow Super Giants.
The auction, saw multiple records break as franchises engaged in bidding battles for premier talent. The previous record set by Mitchell Starc (INR 24.75 crore) in 2024 was surpassed twice within hours, first by Shreyas Iyer and then by Pant.
The wicketkeeper-batter’s return to cricket after his recovery made him the most sought-after player in the auction. Shortly before, Iyer briefly held the record when Punjab Kings secured his services for INR 26.75 crore in another spectacular bidding war.
Venkatesh Iyer emerged as a surprise package, with Kolkata Knight Riders investing heavily in the all-rounder at INR 23.75 crore. Punjab Kings further strengthened their squad by acquiring both Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal for INR 18 crore each, with Arshdeep becoming the most expensive Indian pacer in IPL history.

Both LSG and PBKS, in need of captains, made significant investments in Pant and Shreyas respectively. These acquisitions not only filled crucial leadership roles but also added substantial batting strength to their lineups.
With 204 slots to fill, including 70 positions for foreign players, teams are strategically building their squads from a pool of 577 cricketers (367 Indians and 210 overseas players). The mega auction is set to take place for two days, with more records being broken.
