IPL 2025: 5 Players who earned more than 5 crore last year but might go for their base price this year

The retentions ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) mega auctions saw some shocking names which were left out of the teams. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) increased the purse of every team to 120 crore from 100 crore. With the teams potentially opting for a new strategy had to let off some of their priced possession from last year’s mini-auction.

The BCCI had provided a new retention option for the franchises. A team could retain up to six players including one uncapped player. Several teams in a bid to retain their star players and allot a substantial salary for their players oversaw some players which fans expected least and some were obvious.

Prithvi Shaw was bought by Delhi Capitals (DC) last year for 8 crore. The DC opener batter was mostly sent to open the innings by DC and had the tough task of accelerating from ball one. He did well in some games using the powerplay and setting the tone before he was overlooked.

The right-handed batter played eight games for Delhi and was less than impressive with the bat in the later stages of the game. He scored 198 runs at an average of 24.75 and an impressive strike rate of 163.64. His highest score was 66 and he smashed 30 boundaries and five maximums.

Mayank Agarwal was part of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) camp before the right-handed batter was released ahead of IPL 2025 mega auctions. He was retained by SRH for 8.25 crore and played only four games for them in IPL 2024.

In the limited opportunity he got, he scored 64 runs at an average of 16 and a strike rate of 112.2 with 32 as his highest score. He smashed eight boundaries and one maximum. With Hyderabad retaining six players, they do not have the option to use the Right to Match (RTM) card to claim the services of the Karnataka batter.

3. Umesh Yadav

Veteran pacer Umesh Yadav was bought by Gujarat Titans (GT) for Rs 5.80 crore. This was India pacers highest-ever price in the IPL auction. He played only seven matches for the IPL 2022 champions and was looked over in the second half of the season.

He picked eight wickets at an average of 26.25 with an underwhelming economy rate of 10. The 37-year-old could not be the first choice of the teams but the franchises might want to bank on the Maharashtra-born pacer.

2. Devdutt Padikkal

Devdutt Padikkal was bought by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for 7.75 crore ahead of IPL 2024. The southpaw played predominantly in the middle order for LSG. His struggle with the bat was palpable as he failed to score big runs and was not effective in the powerplay too.

The Karnataka-based batter played seven games in IPL 2024 and scored just 38 runs at an average of 5.43 and a strike rate of 71.70. His highest score was just 13 and he scored three boundaries in the last season for LSG.

Jonny Bairstow was bought by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for 6.75 crore ahead of IPL 2024. He played a surreal innings of an unbeaten 108 runs in IPL 2024. But the batter is facing a slump in the form of lately. He was dropped from England’s ODI and T20I squad against Australia.

Bairstow played 11 games for PBKS in IPL 2024 and scored 298 runs at an average of 29.80 with a strike of 152.82. He smashed 33 boundaries and 14 maximums. His form for England is under scrutiny and the batter has not come among runs.
