IPL 2024: Worst performers after the league stage

The group stage matches of the IPL 2024 have come to an end. KKR, RR, SRH, and RCB have progressed to the playoffs while other teams are unfortunately heading back. The league has witnessed an incredible amount of run-scoring. In the first half of the league, it seemed like no target was enough to defend. Bowlers got beating by the batters and seemed to have little to no solutions to it.

The impact player rule got the criticism for the freedom the batters have gotten. It has been one such season where the bowlers have not been exceptional. Despite being a good season for batting, some of the batters failed to perform. There are some players who could not do well by the end of the league stage.

Here are the worst performers of IPL 2024:

1. Wriddhiman Saha

Wriddhiman Saha had a terrible season as a batter. The GT player failed in almost all the matches and became responsible for poor starts more often than not. In some of the matches, he was dropped. However, due to the lack of better options, Saha had to be brought back into the XI. Despite that, he did not perform well for GT.

2. Jitesh Sharma

Jitesh Sharma was regarded as the front-runner as the WK batter for India in the T20 WC 2024. But he made things worse for himself by failing to step up in any match for PBKS. The right-handed batter had a terrible season as a batter which cost him a potential spot in the T20 WC 2024 squad of India. As a saving grace, however, he did good as a wicketkeeper.

3. Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane was tried in different positions by CSK. But the experienced batter could not succeed in any position. He did not have a good season and cost some games for the side with his batting performances. The right-handed batter was not aggressive which did not help his cause.

4. Dhruv Jurel

Dhruv Jurel had a good Test series for India against England. However, for Rajasthan Royals, he was mediocre. The young batter was inconsistent and often got dismissed quickly. Unlike the previous season where there were no expectations from him, a bit of expectation from him probably played a role in him not batting as well as one would have liked.

Sameer Rizvi was brought by CSK for a price of INR 8.4 crores, making him the highest-paid uncapped player of the season. The youngster could not live up to the expectations and the price tag. He scored 51 runs in 5 innings at a batting average of 12.75, at a batting SR of 118.60 with a best score of 21.

6. Vijay Shankar

Vijay Shankar had a terrible season for GT. The star All-rounder was poor both as a batter and as a bowler. With the ball, Shankar did not get many chances. But in the chances he got, the star player did not bowl well. As a batter, he was poor in the middle order. Compared to 2023, his 2024 season was full of low scores.

Shardul Thakur played 9 games and claimed just 5 wickets. His blowing was not that good and his batting was not essential for the side. Instead of him, CSK had better options to go with. Shardul conceded a lot of runs and did not pick wickets. The star player had a rather forgettable season and did not help CSK with his performances.

8. Azmatullah Omarzai

Azmatullah Omarzai was economical as a bowler in the first couple of games. But he was smashed by the batters for the rest of the season. Even as a batter, he did not have a great season. After having a good tournament in the ODI WC 2023, there were high expectations from him. But Omarzai could not shine in his maiden IPL.

Anrich Nortje is probably the biggest disappointment of the IPL 2024. The South African had terrible performances for DC on a consistent basis and never seemed to be at his best. The star bowler was retained for a price of INR 6.50 crores. The express pacer claimed 7 wickets in 6 matches at a bowling average of 42.00, at a bowling SR of 18.85, at an economy rate of 13.36.

Karn Sharma has had a couple of good games as a player. But in most cases, batters went hard after him and found success. In his spells, the batters thought of clearing the pressure by scoring runs which often helped the change in momentum. He was highly expensive in the group stage barring a couple of games.
