In match 58 of the IPL 2024 season, held in Dharamsala on May 9, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) displayed an outstanding performance against Punjab Kings (PBKS), securing a convincing victory by 60 runs.
Batting first, RCB posted a formidable total of 241/7 in their allotted 20 overs. The inning was anchored by a scintillating knock from their former skipper, Virat Kohli, who hammered 92 runs off just 47 deliveries, displaying exceptional batting prowess with seven fours and six sixes. Contributions from Rajat Patidar (55 off 23) and Cameron Green (46 off 27) further bolstered RCB’s innings, setting a daunting target for PBKS.
PBKS’ bowling attack struggled to contain RCB’s aggressive batting lineup, with Harshal Patel being the most successful bowler, claiming three wickets while conceding 38 runs in his spell.
Chasing a challenging target of 242 runs, PBKS got off to a shaky start, losing their opener Prabhsimran Singh early for just six runs. Jonny Bairstow provided some resistance with a brisk 27 off 16 balls, but it was Rilee Rossouw who spearheaded the PBKS innings with a blistering 61 off 27 deliveries, including nine fours and three sixes. However, PBKS lost wickets at regular intervals, failing to build substantial partnerships. Eventually, they were bundled out for 181 runs in 17 overs, falling short of the target by 60 runs.
RCB’s bowling attack put up a disciplined performance, with Mohammed Siraj leading the charge, claiming three wickets and restricting PBKS batters from gaining momentum.
A lot of positive signs throughout the season: Sam Curran
After the match, PBKS skipper Sam Curran reflected on the season, acknowledging positive signs but expressing disappointment at falling short. Despite believing in their team’s strength, they couldn’t achieve the desired results. Curran appreciated leading his team and their efforts, regretting missed opportunities for more wins. Despite highs and record run-chases, there’s disappointment for fans, but Curran promises to keep fighting, learning, and working hard despite the tough journey of ups and downs.
” A lot of positive signs throughout the season, but not enough to get over the line unfortunately. We knew that we had the best side for the rest of the tournament and feel gutted for the team. Gotta keep our heads up, keep learning and keep becoming better. Really enjoyed leading a great bunch of guys, would have loved a few more wins. We had some highs, and some record run-chases as well,. Lots of disappointment and apologize to the fans, we will keep fighting. The ups and downs have been quite tough, but you gotta keep learning and keep working hard,” he said.
