The 55th match of the IPL 2024 season took place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 6, 2024, featuring a thrilling showdown between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI). In a captivating encounter, MI emerged victorious by comfortably chasing down SRH’s target.
Batting first, SRH posted a competitive total of 173/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Travis Head spearheaded their innings with a solid 48 off 30 deliveries, setting a strong foundation. However, despite promising starts, Abhishek Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Marco Jansen, and Nitish Kumar Reddy struggled to convert their innings into significant scores.
MI’s bowlers, Hardik Pandya and Piyush Chawla, shone brightly by picking up three wickets each, curbing SRH’s run flow effectively. Despite a late flourish by Pat Cummins, who ended unbeaten on 35 off 17 balls, SRH could only post a challenging yet achievable total.
In their reply, MI faced early setbacks losing Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Naman Dhir cheaply. However, Suryakumar Yadav played a phenomenal innings, smashing unbeaten 102 runs off just 51 balls with 12 boundaries and six massive sixes, guiding MI’s chase with authority. Tilak Varma provided crucial support to Yadav, contributing 37 runs off 32 balls. Together, they formed a match-winning partnership that ensured MI comfortably reached the target with 16 balls to spare.
Next up, Mumbai Indians will take on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on May 11th, while Sunrisers Hyderabad will clash with Lucknow on May 8th at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
At the Wankhede you want as many as you can get: Cummins
After the match, Pat Cummins, the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, reflected on their performance, stating they were perhaps a couple of runs short at the Wankhede Stadium. Cummins acknowledged the strong performance by Suryakumar Yadav and expressed optimism about their upcoming matches, hoping for more exciting performances ahead, especially when playing at home.
“Probably a couple short, at the Wankhede you want as many as you can get. You always feel like you’re in, the wicket had a little bit in it so we were definitely in the game. I think Sanvir helped us get to that 170 instead of 150, ideally we’d have a bowler. It’s T20 cricket, and it doesn’t always work out. SKY played really well. We like playing at home, we’ll wait and see what’s ahead of us. Hopefully a few more fireworks,” Cummins said after the macth as quoted by Cricbuzz.
