Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were offered a reality check at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, when they took on the home side Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 46 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The team that shook the cricket fraternity with their humongous first innings scores, suffered their second consecutive defeat while chasing.
While SRH have made huge strides this season, their openers have been shouldering the brunt of the responsibility. Now their middle order is completely exposed and every team knows their weakness when batting second. On the other hand, CSK moved up to the third position in the points table with this huge win of 78 runs.
CSK vs SRH 2nd innings highlight, Match 46:
SRH lose two wickets early on 21/2 in 2 overs
Tushar Deshpande struck twice in his first over to give CSK an early lead. Travis Head started the second innings with a four and welcomed Deshpande to the second over with a maximum. But the right-arm pacer got revenge on the fifth ball.
Head departed for 13 off 7 balls as he failed to clear the deep point on a slower delivery. Deshpande completed the over by sending back SRH’s impact sub Anmolpreet Singh for a golden duck. An outswing delivery on the stumps and a thick leading edge from the batter resulted in Moeen Ali taking an easy catch at extra cover.
Powerplay 1: Overs 0.1 to 6.0 (Mandatory – 53 runs, 3 wickets)
Deepak Chahar conceded 12 runs including two boundaries in the third over. However, Deshpande claimed his third wicket in the form of the dangerous Abhishek Sharma (15 off 9) to put SRH in dire straits. The home team were shell-shocked and finished the powerplay with 53 runs on the board.
1st Strategic Timeout: Sunrisers Hyderabad – 72/4 in 8.5 overs (Aiden Markram 28* off 22, Heinrich Klaasen 0* off 0)
After three wickets fell in the powerplay, Nitish Reddy and Aiden Markram did a decent to rebuild the innings for SRH. However, their 32-run partnership was broken by Jadeja in the fifth ball of the 9th over. The CSK all-rounder removed Reddy with a 104kph delivery and as the latter walked back to the pavilion, teams dispersed for a break.
