Gujarat Titans (GT) faced off against the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk in their second match of IPL 2024. Despite Gill’s new role as captain, GT could not stop CSK from registering their second consecutive win of the season.
Gill, 24, took over the captaincy duties from Hardik Pandya, who led Gujarat Titans to their maiden IPL title in 2022 and finished as runners-up in 2023 before moving to Mumbai Indians this season.
GT also found themselves on the wrong side of the IPL’s Code of Conduct as their captain, Gill, was fined due to the team’s slow over rate during the match held on March 26. He was handed a fine of INR 12 lakhs. The incident marked their first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct regarding minimum over-rate offenses.

Talking about the match, asked to bat first, CSK started with a flyer with brilliant knocks from Rachin Ravindra (46 off 20) and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (46 off 36). Shivam Dube (51 off 23) played an aggressive cameo in the middle to post a total of 206/6.
Rashid Khan ended up with two wickets but he leaked runs with both hands. In reply, Gujarat’s batting crumbled with none of the batters except Sai Sudharsan (37 off 31) showing any fight as they ended their innings with 143/8 as CSK won the game by 63 runs.
