Ahead of the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), there has been a major development for Punjab Kings ahead of the upcoming season. The franchise recently came forward to announce that they have released former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer from their backroom staff as the batting consultant.

Jaffer joined the side in 2023 as the batting coach under head coach Trevor Bayliss. However, PBKS now has Sanjay Bangar as the franchise’s cricket director, and it is worth noting that Bangar has previously been India’s batting coach, and he will fulfill the same role with PBKS, leaving no need for Jaffer.

Before the start of the IPL 2023, Punjab Kings made several changes to their staff, Bayliss was appointed as the head coach, replacing Anil Kumble. Furthermore, the franchise roped in Charl Langeveldt and Brad Haddin in bowling and assistant coach roles, respectively.

Punjab Kings still in search for maiden IPL title

The 2023 season of the IPL was quite an unlucky one for Punjab Kings. The side failed to make it to the knockout stages of the tournament and was eliminated in the group stages. Kings played 14 games in the competition, where they managed to register victories in six games and lost the remaining eight.

They finished the standings in eighth place with 12 points in 14 matches, and they will hope that the 17th edition of the IPL will be a different one for the side. It is worth noting that Punjab Kings have only reached the summit clash of the IPL once in 2014 and the knockout rounds only once in 2008.

With the new season approaching, Punjab Kings will hope for a good performance from them. England’s wicketkeeper batter Jonny Bairstow will reportedly be available for selection, and with several other stars in their arsenal, Kings will look to put in a good showing in the IPL 2024.
