Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 19 runs to remain active in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) playoff race. They got a couple of points along with a small gain in net run rate, but it wasn’t enough to ease their way into the playoffs. Meanwhile, the recent result also diminished LSG’s already faded chances of qualifying.
Invited to bat first, Delhi Capitals posted a huge score of 208 runs in 20 overs. Abishek Porel’s fiery start and Tristan Stubbs’ blazing finish were the main forces behind their strong first innings. In reply, Ishant Sharma’s magnificent spell with the new ball dismantled the LSG batting unit.
The visitors lost four wickets in the powerplay, three of which were taken by Ishant. Later, Nicholas Pooran put up a one-man fight but wickets kept falling at the other end. Arshad Khan’s late burst only helped them narrow the margin of defeat.

1st Wicket: Ishant Sharma strikes in very first over
Delhi Capitals straightaway introduced their Impact Player, Ishant Sharma, as a replacement for Abishek Porel. The veteran pacer opened the attack and got rid of LSG skipper KL Rahul in the very first over. A series of inswing deliveries followed by an outswinger, Rahul (5 off 3 balls) was clueless and ended up in the hands of Mukesh Kumar at cover-point.
Powerplay 1: Overs 0.1 to 6.0 (Mandatory – 59 runs, 4 wickets)
Ishant Sharma got another big wicket of Quinton de Kock (12 off 8) in his second over. Marcus Stoinis was the next man to return to the pavilion as Axar Patel pocketed the Australian for just five runs. Deepak Hooda’s poor form continued as the right-hander was sent packing by Ishant for a two-ball duck. LSG were reduced to 59/4 inside the powerplay, thanks to Ishant’s magnificent spell.
1st Strategic Timeout: Lucknow Super Giants – 85/5 in 9 overs (Krunal Pandya 2* off 3, Nicholas Pooran 53* off 22)
Soon after the powerplay, the visitors lost another wicket in the form of Ayush Badoni (6 off 9). However, despite this collapse, Nicholas Pooran continued his usual attacking game and raced to 53 runs off just 22 balls before the first strategic time out in the ninth over.
Lucknow Super Giants: 100 runs in 10.5 overs
The game quickly turned into DC vs Nicholas Pooran. A couple of boundaries in the 10th over helped them get close to 100, which was achieved in the following over.

2nd Strategic Timeout: Lucknow Super Giants – 149/7 in 16 overs (Arshad Khan 24* off 16, Yudhvir Singh Charak 14* off 6)
When Nicholas Pooran looked set to take the game away from the hosts, Mukesh Kumar’s timely strike in the 12th over ended the threat. Arshad Khan tried to keep the run rate in check with a few big shots but in between they lost Krunal Pandya as well.
End of the match: DC win by 19 runs
Lucknow Super Giants – 189/9 in 20 overs
Arshad Khan was in no mood to give up the game easily. He continued the fight and completed his maiden half-century. However, it was all for nought as DC restricted LSG to 189/9 to win the game by 19 runs.
