Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders faced each other in the final of the IPL 2024 at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Kolkata showcased real dominance, thrashing Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets to clinch the title.
After the game, SRH owner Kavya Maran was seen in tears as her team couldn’t show resilience in the final and were defeated significantly.
Coming to the match, KKR chased down the target of 114 in just 10.3 overs, with 57 balls to spare, showcasing their dominance. SRH, batting first, struggled against KKR’s disciplined bowling attack. Their innings never gained momentum, as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Abhishek Sharma (2), Travis Head (0), and Rahul Tripathi (9) were dismissed early, leaving SRH at 21/3. Aiden Markram (20) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (13) provided brief resistance, but they too fell as the pressure mounted. Pat Cummins’ late effort (24 off 19) was the only notable performance, but SRH were bowled out for a meager 113 in 18.3 overs. Andre Russell was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets for 19 runs, while Mitchell Starc and Harshit Rana took two wickets each.
KKR’s chase was headlined by a blistering innings from Venkatesh Iyer, who scored an unbeaten 52 off 26 balls. Despite losing Sunil Narine (6) early, Iyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (39 off 32) put on a commanding partnership, steering KKR towards the target. Gurbaz fell just before the finish line, but Iyer, along with Shreyas Iyer (6*), ensured there were no further hiccups, sealing the win in 10.3 overs.
