As many as 85 players were released on the Indian Premier League 2024 retention deadline day. The biggest news came from the Mumbai Indians camp as they made multiple financial gymnastics to acquire the services of Hardik Pandya in an all-cash trade from Gujarat Titans.
In all, MI released a total of 11 players, the biggest being Jofra Archer, Jhye Richardson and Tristan Stubbs. Apart from them, Riley Meredith, Duan Jansen, Chris Jordan, Sandeep Warrier, Mohammed Arshad Khan, Ramandeep Singh, Hrithik Shokeen, and Raghav Goyal were released.
Amongst these released players, MI’s arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings might be interested in a few talents and we take a look at three such players CSK might get in the IPL 2024 auction.
Here are the 3 MI released players CSK could target in IPL 2024 auction:
1. Jofra Archer

Jofra Archer was bought by MI in the IPL 2022 auction for INR 8 crore, despite knowing that he wouldn’t be available for the season. However, with the possible option of Jasprit Bumrah and Archer opening the bowling in IPL 2023, MI invested money in the England pacer. In IPL 2023, Bumrah was sidelined due to back surgery and MI depended on Jofra Archer to come good.
But he played just two matches, before flying home due to pain in his elbow and hasn’t played any top-flight cricket since then. But CSK might be extremely interested in Archer as this gives MS Dhoni a bowler with searing pace to lead his attack. But it remains to be seen whether Archer will attain full fitness by IPL 2024 rolls on and whether CSK take a chance on him in the auction.
2. Tristan Stubbs

Tristan Stubbs is a talented South African cricketer who is an explosive batter, a part-time bowler, and also keeps wickets. Such a talent could only play a handful of games for MI and warmed the bench with his countrymate Dewald Brevis for the most part of IPL 2023.
CSK would definitely be interested in investing both money and time in developing Tristan Stubbs in their camp and taking over the keeping duties and perhaps finishing duties with the bat once the MS Dhoni era ends. Given his T20 record, Stubbs is worth taking a chance on for CSK in the IPL 2024 auction.
3. Jhye Richardson
Jhye Richardson is a brilliant bowler with some handy batting skills. However, injuries have been his bane since being picked in the auction but had to miss both seasons after getting injured. MI also showed faith in Richardson to lead the pace attack in case Archer didn’t get fit, but the Australian pacer had his issues.
If he gets fit in time for the IPL 2024, Jhye Richardson should be on top of the CSK list for players to buy in the IPL 2024 auction. He has pace and variety which suits most of the surfaces in India and has prior experience of playing in India.
