The 14th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 saw Punjab Kings take on the 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderbad on Sunday, April 9. Home team skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to field first. Coming in to bat, Punjab Kings faced a terrible collapse. Prabhsimran Singh was sent back to the pavilion by Bhuvneshwar Kumar on the very first ball of the innings.
The relentless bowling attack of the side proved to be too much to handle for Punjab. The entirety of the side’s batting lineup failed to perform, whereas skipper Shikhar Dhawan, on the other hand, truly played a captain’s knock. The veteran Indian batter played an unbeaten knock of 99 runs and propelled his side to a score of 143 runs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, who were coming on the back of consecutive losses, came into the second innings keen on registering their first win of the season. However, the Aiden Markram-led side got off to a rocky start as Harry Brook and Mayank Agarwal were sent back to the pavilion quite early.
It was Rahul Tripathi and skipper Markram who showed resilience and played mature knocks as they propelled Hyderabad to their first win of the IPL 2023 with an unbeaten 100-run partnership. Tripathi played an unbeaten knock of 74 runs, whereas Markram scored 37*. Through their fantastic knocks, Sunrisers Hyderabad were able to win the game comfortably against Punjab by eight wickets.
After their win, the Hyderbad-based franchise registered their first points in the IPL points table. They are now placed eighth in the standings with two points from three matches. On the other hand, Punjab Kings, who were unbeaten so far, lost their first game of the season. The Shikhar Dhawan-led side now sits sixth in the IPL standings with four points from three games.
