Youngster Shubman Gill was in phenomenal touch in Gujarat Titans’ match against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 of the ongoing IPL 2023. The 23-year-old managed to smash 129 runs off 60 deliveries and based on his innings, the defending champions posted 233 runs on board in the first innings. He looked unstoppable in the middle as the cricketer eventually managed to hit his third century in his last four matches of the cash-rich league.
Mumbai Indians’ skipper Rohit Sharma was also impressed by his knock and later congratulated him for the same. Former India skipper Virat Kohli too lauded the 23-year-old while Rishabh Pant put up an Instagram story with the caption ‘class baba’ to congratulate Gill for his terrific knock.
Meanwhile, when it came to the chase, Mumbai batters gave their best but the five-time champions eventually lost the match by 62 runs. Suryakumar Yadav (61 runs off 38 deliveries) and Tilak Varma (43 runs off 14 deliveries) looked brilliant in the middle but neither could help MI reach their seventh final.
Notably, after the completion of the match, Shubman Gill was spotted having an intense chat with legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who’s currently the mentor of Mumbai Indians. Gill was seen listening to Sachin carefully as the duo caught up in a conversation.
The over where I hit three sixes gave me the momentum to go big: Gill
Courtesy of his brilliant knock against MI at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gill was adjudged Player of the Match. In the presentation ceremony, the cricketer opened up and stated that his three sixes off Akash Madhwal in the 12th over actually gave him the momentum to go big.
“For me, it is playing ball to ball, over to over. The over where I hit three sixes gave me the momentum to go big. That’s when I realised it could be my day. It was a good wicket to bat on as well,” said Gill in the post-match presentation.
“I am coming off a good international season as well. Had a good season last time as well. When I start well, I feel confident I can score well. From the last WI tour, I think I have shifted a gear, I got injured before the last IPL but I have been working on my game. I have worked on a few areas and made technical changes ahead of the NZ series after the T20I World Cup,” he added.
