Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RB) by six wickets in the 54th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, May 9. This is the five-time champions’ sixth win in the ongoing IPL season.
MI skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited RCB to bat first. The MI’s Australian bowler Jason Behrendorff provided Mumbai with a massive breakthrough in the first over itself as he dismissed opener Virat Kohli for just one run. He struck again and removed number three batter Anuj Rawat (6). Meanwhile, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell came in and formed a crucial partnership with Faf du Plessis.
Maxwell was on fire as he smashed a quick 68 off 33 balls before being dismissed by Behrendorff. Du Plessis, on the other hand, scored 65 runs from 41 deliveries and was removed by Cameron Green. Their stunning knock, however, helped RCB set a 200-run target for the hosts. For MI, Chris Jordan and Kumar Karthikeya also picked one wicket each.
Suryakumar Yadav’s terrific batting display helps MI beat RCB by 6 wickets
MI openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan produced a steady start for the hosts. However, Wanindu Hasaranga struck twice in the same over, dismissing the keeper-batter for 42 runs and trapping Rohit (7) LBW. However, Nehal Wadhera and Suryakumar Yadav led the charge for MI, putting on a 133-run partnership for the third wicket, which is the highest in the cash-rich league this season.
Vijaykumar Vyshak grabbed Suryakumar’s wicket, but it was too late for RCB since MI needed only 8 runs off 26 balls at that moment. Suryakumar hammered RCB bowlers, scoring 35-ball 83 runs, including seven boundaries and six maximums. Meanwhile, Wadhera scored an unbeaten 52 off 34 balls as MI chased down the target with 21 balls to spare. Apart from Hasaranga, Vyshak too took two wickets for RCB.
