Gujarat Titans’ electrifying clash against Kolkata Knight Riders had a jam-packed crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on their feet when KKR’s Rinku Singh smashed five consecutive sixes in the final over to claim one of the greatest victories in IPL history. ICC put out a tweet to celebrate his knock, drawing a parallel to Carlos Brathwaite’s majestic knock that won the Windies their second T20 World Cup title in 2016.
Nitish Rana’s side were seemingly out of the contest, with his team needing 29 runs from the final over of the match and Rinku Singh as the only recognised batter at the crease. But the pocket-sized dynamo smashed five consecutive sixes off Yash Dayal to clinch a miraculous victory for his side. His innings meant that KKR successfully chased down the most amount of runs in the last over of an IPL match.
Following his mind-numbing assault, the International Cricket Council (ICC) celebrated his innings, remembering a similar blitz from Caribbean all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite. Brathwaite smashed four consecutive sixes against England’s Ben Stokes in the last over of the 2016 T20 World Cup final to seal a second title for the West Indies. The tweet captioned former Windies cricketer Ian Bishop’s iconic words, “Remember the name!”
The West Indies needed 19 runs to win in the final over of the T20 World Cup final against England. Eoin Morgan’s team were the favourites to lift the coveted title at the iconic Eden Gardens. But Brathwaite had other ideas as he took on the mercurial English all-rounder, dispatching him for four consecutive sixes on the first four deliveries to go into the history books in his maiden T20 World Cup.
