The 16th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a heavyweight clash between the David Warner-led Delhi Capitals and the five-time champions Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday, April 11.
Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first. Coming in to bat, Indian batter Prithvi Shaw’s run of poor form continued as the 23-year-old was dismissed after scoring just 15 runs. On the other hand, skipper David Warner continued his red-hot form as he played a captain’s knock.
As wickets kept falling at the other end, Warner showed resilience and helped Delhi reach a respectable total. The entirety of Delhi’s middle-order was unable to perform, as Manish Pandey was dismissed scoring 26 runs, and Yash Dhull, Rovman Powell, and Lalit Yadav only managed to score eight runs combined. However, Axar Patel played an explosive knock down the order amassing 54 runs in 25 deliveries. By the end of the first innings, Delhi Capitals had posted 172 runs on the board.
In the second innings, Mumbai Indians got off to a wonderful start as Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan took the host bowlers for a ride. Rohit amassed 65 runs to his name in 45 deliveries, whereas Ishan Kishan scored 31 runs. After the 24-year-old was run out, Tilak Varma followed up in similar fashion. Varma accumulated 41 runs to his name and was integral to his side’s quest of ultimately clinching the victory.
Suryakumar Yadav’s poor form persisted, as the man who lit the stage at the T20 World Cup 2022, continued to struggle anc could not get going with the bat. He was sent back to the pavilion for a golden duck, and his form could be a big cause for concern for the five-time champions in the forthcoming matches.
Impact player Tim David and Cameron Green had the responsibility on their shoulders to propel Mumbai to a win as the side needed five runs to win off the last over when the game went down the wire. However, through their shared resilience, the duo were able to clinch the first victory of the season for the five-time champions in what was a hundinger of a game.
