The breathtaking action continued in the Indian Premier League 2023 on Super Sunday as Chennai Super Kings took on Punjab Kings in Match 41 on April 30 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. CSK captain MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first.
Chennai’s in-form opening duo Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway walked out to give another fiery start to their side. Both batters took on the bowling in the powerplay and finished the first six overs with a score of 57/0. The duo extended their partnership till 86 off 58 balls with Sikandar Raza giving the first blow to CSK dismissing Gaikwad.
After the fall of the first wicket, CSK sent Shivam Dube (28 off 17) next who added 44 runs for the second wicket with Conway off 26 balls. At the other end, Conway continued to march on and played a scintillating innings of 92* off 52 balls. MS Dhoni walked in to bat in the last over of the innings and gave the perfect finish to CSK as he scored 13* off 4 balls and helped his side reach 200/4 in their allotted 20 overs.
In the second innings, Shikhar Dhawan and Prabhsimran Singh provided a brisk start to PBKS adding 50 runs for the first wicket off 26 balls. Tushar Deshpande gave the first success to CSK dismissing Dhawan in the fifth over. However, Prabhsimran continued to take on CSK’s bowling and played a blistering knock of 42 off 24 balls.
Seeing Prabhsimran taking the game away from CSK, Dhoni brought Ravindra Jadeja into the attack. The southpaw didn’t disappoint as he dismissed Prabhsimran and Atharva Taide in back-to-back overs. With Punjab on 94/3 after 10.2 overs, Liam Livingstone kept his side in the game with his knock of 40 off 24. He was dismissed by Deshpande in the 16th over which threw the game wide open as PBKS required 48 off 24 balls having six wickets in hand.
Sikandar Raza seals the win for PBKS on the last ball
Sam Curran (29 off 20) and Jitesh Sharma (21 off 10) took Punjab closer to victory as they needed just nine to win from the last six balls. Sikandar Raza (13* off 7) and Shahrukh Khan (2 off 3) held their nerves in the last over and took their side home with Raza scoring three runs off the last ball to seal the win for PBKS. As a result, PBKS won the match by four wickets and registered their fifth win of the season. Tushar Deshpande picked three for 49 in his four overs while Ravindra Jadeja picked up 2 for 32 in his four overs.
