After captaining different teams during the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL), Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana will be joining forces as India take on Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series in Bangladesh. This is going to be the Indian team’s first assignment since losing to Australia in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup in February.
Incidentally, India and Bangladesh collided in a warm-up fixture prior to the commencement of the aforementioned World Cup. Richa Ghosh played a swashbuckling knock of 91* in 56 balls and Jemimah Rodrigues also contributed with a 27-ball 41 as India posted 183/5 in their 20 overs.
In reply, Bangladesh could only manage to reach 131/8, losing by 52 runs. As far as ODIs are concerned, Bangladesh’s most recent encounter against India came in the ODI World Cup in 2022. On that occasion, India emerged victorious by 110 runs after scoring 229/7 in 50 overs.
It goes without saying that India would start as overwhelming favourites to win both the T20I series as well as the ODI series. However, Bangladesh would be hoping to use their knowledge of the home conditions to good effect. All six matches will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur.
Some notable names missing from India’s squads for the ODIs and T20Is are pacer Renuka Singh, wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh, and spinner Radha Yadav. The likes of Anusha Bareddy and Rashi Kanojiya have received maiden call-ups for both formats.
Another player who has received a maiden call-up is Minnu Mani (only T20Is). Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), on the other hand, has named a preliminary squad for the home series. Interestingly, experienced players like Jahanara Alam and Rumana Ahmed couldn’t find places in the squad. Instead, some impressive youngsters like Shorna Akter, Marufa Akter, and Rabeya Khan have been brought into the side with an eye on the future.
