Ireland suffered a gut-wrenching two-run defeat by the Duckworth Louis method (DLS) in the first T20I on Friday, August 18, in Dublin. After opting to bowl first, a fit-again Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets in the first over to announce his comeback in grand style. Ireland batters couldn’t handle the sheer quality of the Indian bowling attack and found themselves reeling at 59/6 in 10.3 overs.

The one-way traffic was averted by Curtis Campher and Barry McCarthy as the duo formed a 57-run partnership to give take Ireland past the 100-run mark. The latter batted till the end and finished with a commendable 33-ball 51 with the help of four fours and as many sixes. Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Ravi Bishnoi picked up two wickets each while Arshdeep Singh chipped in with a wicket as Ireland ended their innings on 139/7 in 20 overs.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and vice-captain Ruturaj Gaikwad opened the innings for India under overcast conditions. The Irish pacers bowled well and went past the bat on a number of occasions but couldn’t get the first wicket. Captain Paul Stirling introduced Craig Young in the seventh over and the right-arm pacer dismissed Yashasvi and Tilak Varma to bring Ireland right back into the game. With the score at 47/2 in 6.5 overs, the players walked back to the pavilion as umpires called for the covers due to heavy rain. No restart was possible due to relentless rain as India won the encounter by virtue of being two runs ahead of the DLS par score.

Ireland will consider themselves unlucky as the game stopped when they were on the ascendency. They will have to forget the past and focus on winning the second T20I to keep the series alive.

Pitch Reports and conditions

The new ball tends to swing at the Malahide Cricket Club Ground and with chances of overcast conditions on offer, the pacers will be fancying themselves upfront. However, once a batter gets set, they will have plenty of opportunities to score at this venue.
