Courtesy of a stellar bowling display from Mohammed Shami followed by composed fifties from Ruturaj Gaikwad (71) and Shubman Gill (74), helped India to beat Australia in the first ODI by five wickets at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium.

India won the toss and elected to bowl first. Mohammed Shami struck early to dismiss Mitchell Marsh for four runs. David Warner and Steven Smith put together a 94-run partnership for the second wicket, but after Warner was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja and Smith was dismissed shortly thereafter, the rest of Australia’s wickets fell in quick succession. Marnus Labuschagne (39), Cameron Green (31), and Josh Inglis (45) all made good starts, but no one could convert it into a big score. As India chipped away with wickets at regular intervals, Australia were bowled out for 276 at the close of 50 overs. Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers with his brilliant performance of 5/51 in 10 overs.
