India may have lost the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by a 3-1 margin due to most members of the squad not rising up to the occasion. However, there was one player in the form of Jasprit Bumrah who truly gave it his all in the entire series. The overall effort was so brilliant that he ended up as the leading wicket-taker in the series with an outstanding 32 wickets to his name.

In a recent discussion, former Indian wicketkeeper, Deep Dasgupta, urged the selectors and the team management to not overexert the ace Indian pacer by making him play the white-ball series against England and keep him at bay till the upcoming marquee Champions Trophy event.

“Let him rest. Don’t even think about it till the Champions Trophy. Maybe, the last ODI if he is ready for it. Obviously, we are not sure about the extent of that back spasm, as we were told. So, we need to figure that out,” shared Dasgupta on Star Sports.

The former cricketer-turned-commentator’s comments come after Bumrah was detected with a back spasm after he complained of a niggle in his back after India’s second innings in the Sydney Test. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital to assess the issue, and hence, missed out on bowling in the final innings of the five-match series.

The former cricketer put forward the same approach to be followed for Mohammed Siraj, who bowled 157.1 overs in the entire series.

“Keeping that in mind, let’s park Jasprit Bumrah for the time being, and with Siraj as well. I think he has bowled 150-plus overs in this (BGT) series. He needs a well-deserved rest as well. So Siraj and Bumrah, let’s park those names there,” he opined further.

Shami ready to bowl four overs or 10 overs: Dasgupta

Along the same lines, the Kolkata-born wanted Mohammed Shami to be incorporated into the series against England. He justified his opinion by citing Shami’s involvement in the ongoing domestic circuit.

“Mohammed Shami has been playing domestic cricket. He has played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. You know he is ready to bowl four overs or 10 overs. Would you want to keep him in the loop with the Champions Trophy coming up? Might not be a bad option,” the 47-year-old added.

India will play five ODIs and three T20Is against England ahead of the highly-awaited Champions Trophy. The squads for the same have not been released yet. The Indian cricket fraternity would be hoping that Bumrah to be fully fit by the time the Champions Trophy gets underway.
