Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed his concerns over India’s recent struggles in Test cricket and has asked skipper Rohit Sharma to take responsibility for leading the team. Ganguly mentioned that while Rohit has been brilliant in white-ball cricket, his Test performances have been underwhelming. With a five-match Test series scheduled against England, the former captain believes India needs Rohit to step up both as a leader and a batter.
India’s recent Test performances have been far from their best. The team suffered a historic 0-3 whitewash at home against New Zealand in October-November 2024. This was followed by a 1-3 series loss in Australia, ending the side’s chances for the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final qualification. These back-to-back defeats have raised serious questions about the side’s approach in the longest format of the game. Ganguly did not shy away from addressing Rohit’s inconsistency in Test cricket.
“What has surprised me is his form in red ball over last 4-5 years. A player of his stature and ability, he can do much better than what he has done. He must put on his thinking cap because we have 5 Tests against England and that’s going to be another hard series. Just like the way it was in Australia. It’s going to seam; it’s going to swing. India need him to perform in the red ball but in white ball, he is one of the greatest ever,” Ganguly, the former India captain, said during Trailblazers 3.0, by RevSportz.

India will begin their next WTC cycle with the five-Test series in England, starting June 20. The tour will be a great opportunity for the team to bounce back, but it will not be easy. India has not won a Test series in England since 2007.
“I’m not surprised that he’s taken the side to greater heights in white ball. I don’t know whether he’s going to continue playing Test cricket but if he is hearing me, he should take the responsibility of turning things around in red-ball. India are not good at red-ball at the moment and they need to look at it, find a way to play well in England because that’s going to be a very important five-Test series. Rohit has to find a way to get this team going,” he added.
