Openers Reeza Hendricks and Tony de Zorzi played a crucial role in South Africa’s convincing victory over India in the second ODI of the series on December 19 in Gqeberha. Hendricks showed his class and provided a solid foundation for the chase while de Zorzi stole the show with his outstanding century as South Africa won the match by eight wickets. Rassie van der Dussen managed to keep up his good form as the home team managed to level up the series.

Batting first, India struggled to get going as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Tilak Varma failed to make a mark. Sai Sudharsan (62 off 83) and KL Rahul (56 off 64) bailed the team out of a difficult situation but soon after they got out, the Men in Blue struggled with the bat once again as they were bundled out for 211 runs.

Sanju Samson was one player that was under the scanner in the second ODI. Despite playing well in the domestic circuit, the Kerala-born cricketer is yet to cement his place in the playing XI and the series against the Proteas holds a lot of importance for him. However, he failed with the bat as he scored 12 off 23 while debutant Rinku Singh scored 17off 14.

When it came to the chase, the Aiden Markram-led side started strongly. Indian bowlers lacked rhythm as it proved to be an easy chase for the home side. Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan, who picked up five wickets and four wickets in the last match respectively, looked good but their inability to pick wickets cost India the match.

There was a lot of expectation from Mukesh Kumar in the series, but the cricketer is yet to make a mark. He has done well in the shortest format but yet to crack the code in the ODI format. Nevertheless, there is all to play for in the final ODI of the series and both batting and bowling unit will aim to put up a better show.
