In a brilliant display of power-hitting, Rohit Sharma etched his name in the record books on the opening day of the third Test against England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. The right-handed batter not only played a crucial knock for India but also surpassed the sixes tally of former skipper MS Dhoni.
With his second six of the innings, Rohit soared past Dhoni’s mark of 78 maximums in Test cricket. As fans think about the power-packed innings, it’s worth noting that former opener Virender Sehwag still holds the record for the most sixes by an Indian in Tests, with an impressive 91 hits.
Rohit’s prowess extends beyond the red-ball format; he is the most prolific six-hitter in international cricket. A total of 590 maximums across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is showcases his dominance in the power-hitting department. Notably, in T20Is, he leads the charts with 190 sixes in 143 innings, while in ODIs, he secures the third spot with 323 maximums in 254 innings.

However, England’s dynamic captain, Ben Stokes, holds the overall record for the most sixes in Tests, with a staggering 128 maximums in 179 innings. Following him closely are Brendon McCullum and Adam Gilchrist.
Looking at the most sixes by Indians in Tests, Rohit Sharma now stands second in the list with 79 sixes in 97 innings, trailing only behind the explosive Virender Sehwag.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently put an end to speculations about India’s T20 captaincy, expressing confidence in Sharma’s leadership. Speaking at the unveiling of the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, Shah commended India’s performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, despite losing in the final. He voiced his belief that India, under Sharma’s captaincy, will secure victory in the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024.
“People were waiting for me to speak about the ODI World Cup 2023. We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts thereby winning 10 matches in a row. I am confident that India will win the 2024 T20I World Cup under Rohit Sharma,” said Jay Shah during the naming ceremony of Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot.
