India didn’t break a sweat on Day 5 as they registered a comprehensive seven-wicket win to bag full points from the two-match series against Bangladesh and consolidate their position at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings.

On Tuesday, October 1, the Indian players walked out at Green Park, Kanpur smelling another series win at home. Bangladesh were placed at 26/2, trailing India’s first innings lead by another 26 runs. Shadman Islam and first innings centurion Mominul Haque were the overnight batters who came out to the middle at the start of Day 5.

Ravichandran Ashwin got the better of Mominul in the third over of the day as his attempted sweep shot was caught by KL Rahul at leg slip. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto joined Shadman in the middle and they played some counter-attacking cricket to forge a 55-run partnership off just 84 balls. However, the partnership was broken by Ravindra Jadeja as Shanto was cleaned up after attempting a reverse sweep. Akash Deep accounted for the wicket of Shadman in the following over as India got both the set batters dismissed. The latter got out immediately after scoring his half-century.

Subsequently, Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan lost their wickets in quick succession as Bangladesh went from 91/3 to 94/7. Mushfiqur Rahim tried to delay the inevitable as he scored a gritty 37 off 63 balls before being the last Bangladeshi batter to depart. Jasprit Bumrah took the last three Bangladeshi wickets – Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, and Mushfiqur as the visitors were rolled over for 146. Bumrah, Ashwin, and Jadeja took three wickets apiece, while Akash Deep chipped in with a solitary scalp.

Yashasvi Jaiswal hits another swashbuckling half-century as India complete clean sweep

India needed just 95 runs to win the encounter and they had two sessions to get the job done. Mehidy got Rohit’s wicket in the third over as the Indian captain holed out at deep backward square. Shubman Gill also fell cheaply but Yashasvi Jaiswal continued from where he had left in the first innings. Jaiswal added 58 runs off just 67 balls with Virat Kohli to take India on the cusp of a series victory. The former got to his second half-century in the Test match off just 43 balls.

Jaiswal was eventually dismissed for an enterprising 51 off 45 deliveries. Delhi cricketers Rishabh Pant and Kohli took India home in the 18th over as the former hit a boundary off Taijul Islam to wrap things up in style.
