India all-rounder Shivam Dube has been ruled out of the three-match series against Bangladesh, scheduled to commence on October 6 in Gwalior, owing to a back injury. Tilak Varma has been named as the all-rounder’s replacement.
“All-rounder Shivam Dube is ruled out of the three-match T20I series owing to a back injury. The Senior Selection Committee has named Tilak Varma as Shivam’s replacement. Tilak will link up with the squad in Gwalior on Sunday morning,” a BCCI media release read.
Dube was a part of all eight of India’s games at the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Americas, while he also played the subsequent series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, for Varma, there could not be a more opportune moment to stamp his mark of authority. Having played a total of 15 innings in his nascent T20I career, he has done significantly well for the side. However, he now has a chance to stake a claim as a 20-over regular for the national side.

With Varma not really being entrusted with the ball until this point, it will be interesting to see how Gautam Gambhir & Co. manage their resources when it comes to the fifth bowling option. It seems as if one of Hardik Pandya or Riyan Parag will have to shoulder an additional amount of burden when it comes to delivering with the ball, assuming Varma is not given the ball at all.
