David Warner and Pat Cummins have already been ruled out of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy and as per reports, they might not return to India for the ODI series as well. Warner, who fractured his elbow is currently recovering from his injury and thus, Cricket Australia may not risk him, given the ODI World Cup is slated to take place later in the year.
When it comes to Pat Cummins, he is yet to make a decision but it’s very likely that he will skip the ODI series to be with his mother, who is in palliative care. Now, in case the all-rounder misses out, Steve Smith will be seen leading the Australian side in the three-match ODI series.
Meanwhile, it is believed that the ODI series could have revamped David Warner’s red-ball career, as he is very likely to lose his place in the squad. Given his poor record in England, Australia may not consider him for the coming World Test Championship (WTC) final and for the Ashes as players like Travis Head can get an extended run at the top of the order.
Maxwell, Marsh still not certain for India tour
Flamboyant all-rounder Glenn Maxwell suffered a freak injury and fractured his leg right after the T20 World Cup. Since then, he has missed the Big Bash League, domestic cups in Australia and multiple international tours. Now, even though he is named in the squad, Maxwell remains to be a massive doubt. As per a report by Zero Cricket, he is yet to recover completely and the board may hesitate to send him given the ODI World Cup later in the year.
When it comes to Mitchell Marsh, the star all-rounder is expected to travel to India but may not play all the matches. He recently suffered an ankle and has recovered but just like David Warner and Glenn Maxwell, the team management may not risk him by playing all the matches.
On the other hand, ace pacer Jhye Richardson has re-aggravated his hamstring injury and will be replaced by Nathan Ellis in the white-ball series.
