The International Cricket Council (ICC) has extended its new Chair and Independent Director’s tenure. The newly formed tenure would be extended from the current two years to three years. Moreover, they can hold the positions for three consecutive terms, while the future elected Chairs cannot be re-elected.

This will allow the likes of the newly elected Chairman, Jay Shah to hold the chair for six years and the condition would be that the person have to be elected twice and not thrice. Shah is poised to commence his tenure officially from December 1 after being elected unopposed as the latest chairman.

On the other hand, Dr John Maclean will replace Dr. Roger Hawkes on the Medical Advisory Committee as Hawkes took voluntary retirement.

ICC bolsters women’s cricket with new structures

The board also took some steps to bolster the women’s cricket. It has been decided that two annual T20I tournaments for women’s Associate Members (AM) will be introduced teams starting in 2025. This will allow the 24 AM teams to get into the structure and an opportunity to qualify for the 16-team ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2030. The move has come in the wake of catalysing the preparations for reaching out to the wider audience during ICC events in the 2028-2031 cycle.

In a substantial step towards women’s ODI cricket, the board will provide ODI status to women’s Associate teams for the 2025-2029 cycle. Given two teams get selected for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in 2025, they will subsequently earn ODI status. The three slots left out shall be accredited by ICC T20I rankings during the annual update.
