The departing Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Jay Shah, is set to become the Independent Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah’s jump to this role is not just a personal milestone but also a shift in global cricket, given his influence in political, and financial matters.

The son of India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah, the 35-year-old holds a huge influence in the nation and worldwide. Shah has shown a keen understanding of the sport’s intricacies and the business that drives it. He recently stated about not insisting that top Indian players participate in domestic tournaments, citing injury risks and the need to respect players.

Jay Shah’s upcoming role as ICC chairman comes at a time when cricket is going through several challenges. The growing influence of domestic T20 and T10 franchises, the sport’s re-entry into the Olympics in 2028, and the complex geopolitical tensions, particularly the strained relations between India and Pakistan, all present formidable challenges.

Moreover, the ICC’s ongoing negotiations with broadcasters, such as Disney Star, who are reportedly seeking a reduction in their USD 3 billion deal, show the financial pressures on the global game.

As Shah steps into this role, questions arise about his leadership style. Many are waiting to see whether he will continue to exercise the centralized authority he has been known for at the BCCI, or if will he embrace the spirit of inclusivity. Meanwhile, Rohan Jaitley, another member of the BJP stable of sports administrators and the son of a former Minister,  late Arun Jaitley is likely to succeed him.
